MTD for Income Tax — April 2026

When does Making Tax Digital apply to you?

Answer five quick questions to get your personal start date, quarterly deadline calendar, and step-by-step action plan.

Step 1 of 5 0%
Step 1 of 5
Are you digitally excluded?
HMRC grants a full exemption from MTD to people who cannot use digital tools due to age, disability, or living in an area without reliable internet access. If this applies to you, MTD will not be mandatory — but you must formally apply to HMRC.
Step 2 of 5
What kind of income do you have?
MTD for Income Tax applies to individuals with self-employment or property rental income. HMRC combines both streams when calculating your threshold.
Step 3 of 5
What is your gross income?
Enter amounts before expenses. HMRC uses gross combined income to determine your start date. Choose the tax year that matches the figures you know.

Step 4 of 5
Are you registered for Self Assessment with HMRC?
If you file a tax return each year you are already registered. MTD requires Self Assessment registration before you can sign up — and registration can take 2–4 weeks to process.
Step 5 of 5
Do you use MTD-compatible accounting software?
MTD requires digital record-keeping and quarterly submissions through HMRC-approved software. Spreadsheets and paper records will not meet the new requirements on their own.
